Deep Throat: Deep Threat?

Yesterday, Mark Felt was Deep Throat. Today, Mark Felt is simply ‘marked.’ As I often remind you, my faithful readers, I am not one to jump on the conspiracy bandwagon. However, if my fellow bloggers really want to know and understand the power of the mythical ‘main stream media’ (“MSM”), one need only look to the hatchet job being done on Mr. Felt.

Let’s recap the story thus far. Felt, frustrated by what he perceived as the Nixon administration’s hindrance of the FBI’s investigation, began to feed information to two Washington Post reporters, the venerable Woodward and Bernstein. The three agreed that Felt’s role in exposing the story would remain a secret until Felt died.

Enter money, or the lack thereof. Felt’s family pushed him to come forward. And why not? Wasn’t Deep Throat a national hero? Wasn’t he going to be celebrated in this age of whistle blowers? Shouldn’t he be rewarded by a book deal, movie deal and the like?

Not so fast my friend. You see, Mark Felt, in his rush to cash in before he checked out, stepped on a few toes. Not the least of which were Woodward and Bernstein themselves. Felt deprived the two of their real payday. When W & B were ready to make their announcement, I’m thinking in 2012 (the 40 year anniversary), they could cash in with a book, and countless invitations to speak around the country. The Washington Post could sell more papers with various retrospectives and interviews. It would have been one nice tidy payday. Without Felt.

Last Monday, Deep Throat would have been congratulated as a hero. Today, he’s a greedy old man who was a mediocre FBI manager. BOO. BOO, I say!

I say, bravo Mr. Felt.

In other news

Some crazy woman in Tennessee hired a stripper for her son’s 16th birthday. I say BOO on the mother, but bravo for the son. Also, from Yahoo! News, a Florida court throws out a $1.2 million jury award for the family of a teacher gunned down by a student.

I mention this because the theory advanced by the plaintiff’s attorney was that because, “federal officials had told Valor for years that its .25-caliber Raven handgun was frequently used in crimes ... that the company had a legal responsibility to make the weapons safer.”

Slight problem. How exactly does one go about making a gun safer for use in crimes? Morons.

Last thing before I go

Did you know that Vice President Richard Johnson was ‘married’ to a black woman? I use married loosely because his was a common law marriage to former slave Julia Chinn. I didn’t know that. But I do now. And so do you.

Note- Check out Lashawn's take on the Mark Felt story. And while you're there, she discusses the viability of this medium called blogging, in wake of the proposed FEC rules and a column from some print media guy whose name escapes me. Good stuff.
